Exploring Climate Processes and Environmental Change in Mountain Regions
The High-Mountain Geophysical Institute (HMGI) is one of Russia’s leading scientific institutions in the fields of atmospheric physics, climate research, mountain geophysics, environmental monitoring, and natural hazard studies. Established in 1957, the Institute is located in Nalchik, at the foothills of Mount Elbrus, providing direct access to one of the most important natural laboratories for the study of high-mountain environments and climate processes.
For decades, HMGI has conducted fundamental and applied research on atmospheric circulation, weather and climate variability, hydrometeorological processes, glaciology, avalanche dynamics, mudflows, and environmental risks in mountainous regions. The Institute operates a unique network of observational sites and research facilities in the Central Caucasus, generating long-term datasets of national and international scientific importance.
HMGI plays a significant role in advancing understanding of climate change impacts in mountain regions, improving environmental forecasting and risk assessment, and developing scientific approaches to sustainable management of vulnerable ecosystems. The Institute actively collaborates with research centres, universities, and international organisations, contributing to global efforts in climate science, environmental resilience, and sustainable development.
